Frank W. Benson: American Impressionist
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (August, 2002)
Average review score:

Dynamite art book; also a great read!I had thought that Benson was strictly a painter of Victorian era young ladies in seaside settings. This bio (by a descendent) fleshes out his various careers as a painter of oils, a teacher, a water colorist and whatever is the correct term for one who creates etchings. Also provides a good overview of the American art scene (especially "The Ten") during the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.

Healing Yourself: A Practical Guide
Published in Paperback by Hampton Roads Pub Co (May, 1998)
Average review score:

REMARKABLEThis is a remarkable book on the 'divine' powers of healing inherent in each of us. I very strongly recommend it to anyone suffering from physical (including life-threatening) or emotional illness, and am ordering more copies to pass on to friends and others. In my opinion, it is much more practical and effective than another excellent book "You Cannot Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought" (which I gave to a friend who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer at a major cancer center, and told that she only had 'six months to live' - she is alive healthy 15 years later, with no trace of the cancer).

A sweet story in touch with kids' fearsThis book charmingly deals with a child's fear of being away from home when the Easter Bunny is due to visit. How will the Easter Bunny know where to find him? It's a dilemma handled with grace and style by author Kay Winters. This is a reassuring, satisfying read for young kids and their parents.

I Am Not a Short Adult!: Getting Good at Being a Kid (A Brown Paper School Book)
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Juv Pap) (October, 1977)
Average review score:

A fantastic book!My mother gave me this book when I was a kid. I just found my old copy, read it again, and decided my 13-year-old absolutely must have a copy (though I'm not about to part with mine)! I'm thrilled to see it still in print!
Margaret Burns writes wonderfully for adolescents. It's such a tough age for kids, and they're pretty sure they're the center of the universe. Ms. Burns points out (in ways they might actually listen to) all the things that you really wish you could impress upon them, but can't since you've been relegated to the role of "dumb grown-up" for the next ten years.
She really gives them a chance to think about what kind of kid they really want to be, emphasizing that the choice is really theirs, and without telling kids what their values ought to be. (That part is stil up to parents.) It's an important lesson for kids to learn, and this book is a great tool.

The J. Paul Getty Museum Handbook of the Photographs Collection
Published in Paperback by J Paul Getty Museum Pubns (June, 1995)
Average review score:

Excellent as a reference and art historyMore than just a summary presentation of the Getty's extensive holdings, "Handbook of the Photographs Collection" provides an excellent history of the art and science of photography. That the material at the Getty alone would provide for such a discourse speaks volumes of the depth and breadth of their collection. This one stays on my coffee table.

Jack and Jill and Big Dog Bill: A Phonics Reader (Step into Reading)
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (22 January, 2002)
Average review score:

The first book she ever read! This book was the first book my daughter ever picked up and read entirely on her own. She beamed with pride as she was able to sound out every word. It's simple story and helpful pictures gave her such a sense of accomplishment as she mastered her very first story. This book will have a place of honor on our bookshelf as my little reader speeds onto other more complex books and continues to develop a love for books.
